Also, know that the purpose of floating pond heaters is not to heat your pond. Rather, their purpose is to create a small hole in the ice to allow toxins to be released during the time that the pond is frozen over.

If not allowed to escape, these toxins (caused by decomposing fish waste and other organic matter) can put stress on or even kill your fish.

Know that floating pond heaters require electricity to run. But it is possible to find more energy efficient ones if you are worried about either the environment or your energy bills.
